The Naze is a Public Open Space in Walton-on-the-Naze on the North Essex coast. It is a site of Special Scientific Interest, that also provides a community resource for culture, recreation, employment and health.
This unique environment is the chosen overwintering spot for a number of birds such as Dark Bellied Brent Geese and Shelduck. Hamford Water, part of the Naze area, is also known for nationally important colonies of Little Tern and Avocet, which also breed there. In addition, the Hamford Water nature reserve is a good place to spot common and grey seals and is the setting for the much-loved children’s novel Secret Water by Arthur Ransome.
The Naze is also home to the Naze Tower, a Grade 2 listed building, recognised by Historic England for its unique architectural and historic interest and is the only one of its kind remaining in existence.
The Naze is under threat of erosion, currently tracking at a rate of 3-5m per annum and following the severe winter storms of 2020/21 urgent action is required. It is anticipated that within 10 years, the North end of the Naze will be lost to the sea and it will breach into Hamford Water.
The impact of this will be loss of wildlife habitat and for local businesses around Hamford Water.
We need your help to stop the impact of coastal erosion, from which there will be no return. By contributing to the Naze Protection Society, you will enable us to promote and develop solutions to protect the environment for future generations to enjoy.
